Zeb Snyder is a flatpicker from Lexington, North Carolina. He led the Snyder Family Band with his sister Samantha for 11 years and six albums, then joined Appalachian Road Show as its guitarist. That band won IBMA New Artist of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year in 2021. His self-titled solo debut came out in 2025 with Sam Bush, Todd Phillips, and Jason Carter as guests.
Why Snyder matters
Snyder is the picker who brought Duane Allman and Dickey Betts into a bluegrass guitar break without breaking the band. He wrote most of the tunes in his family band, then proved himself in a hard-driving traditional group. His solo record shows the other side: acoustic blues and Southern rock played on a flattop. For a jammer who likes both Tony Rice and the Allman Brothers, he is the map.
Life and career
Snyder grew up in Lexington, North Carolina, in a home-schooled family that made music part of the curriculum. He started Suzuki classical guitar lessons at age seven. About four years later he found flatpicking and taught himself. His younger sister Samantha started on Suzuki violin, and the two switched to bluegrass together. Zeb taught his father Bud to play bass so the family could have a band.
The Snyder Family Band played for 11 years and made six albums. In 2011 Zeb won a Gerald Anderson guitar at Renofest. Building Bridges came out on Mountain Roads Recordings in 2013, and Zeb wrote six of its songs. The band signed with Mountain Home Music in 2014 and released Wherever I Wander in 2015. Zeb was 19 and played guitar and mandolin. The Life We Know followed in 2016 as the band’s last record. The IBMA named him a Momentum Award nominee for instrumentalist in 2017. The family band ended in 2018.
That year he played with the Darrell Webb Band and on Adam Steffey’s album New Primitive. He then took the guitar chair in Appalachian Road Show with Barry Abernathy, Darrell Webb, Jim VanCleve, and Todd Phillips. He plays on Tribulation (Billy Blue Records, 2020) and Jubilation (Billy Blue Records, 2022). The band won two IBMA awards in 2021 and made its Grand Ole Opry debut in 2022. Snyder now lives in Tennessee.
His solo album, Zeb Snyder, came out in July 2025. He cut it in two days in Nashville with Dewey Boyd producing. The ten tracks split between five originals and five covers, with no banjo. It is his debut as a lead singer. Sam Bush plays mandolin, Todd Phillips plays bass, and Jason Carter plays fiddle.
Playing style
Snyder plays clean, fast flatpicking with a blues bend in it. Reviewers hear Doc Watson and Norman Blake in his tone and Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughan in his phrasing. His family band tune Trick Shot mixed straight flatpicking with chicken pickin’, and his solo record leans toward acoustic blues.
He plays Wayne Henderson guitars: a sunburst D-18 style dreadnought, number 522, and an OM-18 style, number 399, that he won in a youth guitar contest. He uses a BlueChip TAD1R 60 pick and plays into a microphone with no pickup. Gallagher Guitar also lists him as an artist.
Influences and legacy
Snyder names Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, and Jerry Reed as his main guitar influences. He points to Rice’s Native American and Sam Bush’s Glamour and Grits as records that shaped him, along with the Allman Brothers Band and Dickey Betts.
He teaches guitar, mandolin, dobro, and bass, both in person and online. The Snyder Family Band was featured in the Generation Bluegrass films.

What to learn from Snyder
Learn Sally Goodin from his solo video. His version keeps the melody plain enough to follow. The technique to steal is his blues bend inside a bluegrass break. Take one phrase of the tune and bend a note a half step on the way to the chord tone. Do it once per break, not ten times. That one bend gives a straight tune the Allman Brothers flavor he is known for.
