Adam Wright is a contest flatpicker from Goodlettsville, Tennessee. He won the National Flatpicking Championship at Winfield, Kansas, in 2001 and placed third there in 2012 and 2017. He has competed at Winfield since 1994 and has placed in the top five at the Wayne Henderson Music Festival guitar contest seven times between 1999 and 2019.
Why Wright matters
Wright is a working picker, not a touring star. He holds a day job and still shows up at the big contests year after year. His placings span more than 25 years, from a Henderson second place in 1999 to a GallagherFest win in 2025. For a jammer with a job, he is proof that contest-level flatpicking fits around a regular life.
Life and career
Wright first went to the Walnut Valley Festival in 1992 and entered the contests in 1994. In 1998 he placed third in the Winfield mandolin championship. In 1999 he placed second at the Wayne Henderson Music Festival guitar contest in Virginia, behind Scott Fore. He won the Henderson contest in 2000, ahead of Robert Shafer.
In 2001 he won the National Flatpicking Championship at Winfield. His prize was a Collings D2H. A 2005 Bluegrass Today notice about a Central Texas Bluegrass Association compilation also credits him with wins at MerleFest, RockyGrass, and the 2005 Texas State Flatpicking Championship.
Wright kept competing through the 2010s. He placed third at Winfield in 2012, behind Roy Curry and Allen Shadd, and third again in 2017. At the Henderson contest he placed fourth in 2013, 2014, and 2019, third in 2017, and second in 2018. In May 2025 he won the flatpicking guitar contest at GallagherFest in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and took home a Gallagher G-45.
Outside music Wright works as a CT technologist. He also builds and repairs guitars.
Playing style
Wright plays standard fiddle tunes with a clean, driving right hand. In a 2018 session at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville he plays contest tunes and talks through his approach to learning flatpicking. In a 2024 jam with Tony Watt at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, he takes Bill Cheatham at a steady clip with the melody clear in every break.
Influences and legacy
Wright came up in the Winfield contest scene of the 1990s and has traded placings with Scott Fore, Robert Shafer, Roy Curry, Allen Shadd, Andrew Hatfield, and Steve Lewis. He plays and places alongside younger champions like Presley Barker and Parker Hastings. His guitar building and repair work ties him to the instrument side of the craft.

Watch and listen
Wright plays and teaches at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville for Guitar Gathering, recorded June 5, 2018. Watch his right hand stay loose on fast passages.
Wright and Tony Watt jam on Bill Cheatham at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Listen for how he keeps the melody inside the variations.
What to learn from Wright
Learn Bill Cheatham at a moderate tempo with a metronome. Play the melody plain for two passes, then add one variation per part. The technique to steal is his consistency. Wright has placed at Winfield across three decades because his arrangements stay clean at speed. Record one contest tune once a week and listen for dropped notes before you push the tempo.
