Luke Lovejoy is a flatpicker and mandolin player from Indiana. He won the National Flatpicking Championship at Winfield, Kansas, in 2018. He was 16, self-taught, and four years into the guitar. It was his first trip to the Walnut Valley Festival. He has since placed in the top three at Winfield on both guitar and mandolin.
Why Lovejoy matters
Lovejoy won Winfield with almost no contest experience. He arrived with two tunes ready for the first round and had to work up two more for the finals. He won. For a jammer, his story is proof that a small number of fiddle tunes, played clean and in time, can beat a big repertoire played loose.
Life and career
Lovejoy grew up in Cloverdale, Indiana. He taught himself guitar and had played for about four years when he entered Winfield in 2018 as a high school junior. Before that his only contest was a local one with five other players.
At Winfield he saw several of his guitar heroes in the warm-up area and figured he had no chance. He played the first round on a dreadnought loaned by Bourgeois Guitars, since his own guitar was an inexpensive import. He made the finals, played two fiddle tunes he had not planned on, and won. The prize was a Collings Winfield Model guitar.
He came back on mandolin and placed second in 2019 and third in 2023. In 2024, listed from Spencer, Indiana, he took third in the flatpick guitar contest and was a runner-up in the mandolin finals. He has played on video with fellow Indiana picker Ethan Batan, who won the Winfield mandolin championship in 2023.
Playing style
Lovejoy plays fiddle tunes with a strong, even right hand and a clear melody. Videos from his teens show him on Red Haired Boy and Wildwood Flower, the kind of standards that contest judges know note for note. His approach fits the Winfield rules, which reward arrangement and clean execution over speed.
His Winfield prizes are a Collings Winfield Model guitar (2018), a Pava F5 Pro mandolin (2019), and a Martin HD-28 Modern Deluxe guitar (2024).
Influences and legacy
Lovejoy came up in Indiana alongside mandolinist Ethan Batan, who lists the same hometown of Spencer. He has jammed on video with Tony Watt and talked flatpicking on camera with Hayes Griffin, who took second at Winfield in 2024. Jason Shaw, a four-time Winfield guitar champion, placed second the year Lovejoy won.

What to learn from Lovejoy
Learn Red Haired Boy and play it until it is clean at a slow jam tempo. The technique to steal is his contest habit of preparing a short list. Pick four tunes, the same number Winfield requires, and make them the best four tunes you play. A tight set of four beats a loose set of forty at any jam.
