Carl Miner is a flatpicker, mandolin player, and Nashville session musician. He won the National Flatpicking Championship at Winfield, Kansas, in 1999 and again in 2025, 26 years apart. On the same weekend in 2025 he also won the National Mandolin Championship. He has recorded with Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, and Rascal Flatts.
Why Miner matters
Miner won Winfield as a teenager, then came back a quarter century later and won with his own compositions instead of the fiddle tunes most contestants play. He won on mandolin the same day. For a jammer, he shows that contest chops and a working musician’s ear can live in the same player.
Life and career
Miner was born December 31, 1981. His stepfather taught him the basics on guitar. He grew up in Oregon and entered Winfield from there, placing second in 1998 and winning in 1999 at age 17. His 1999 prize was a Taylor W-10 Custom.
He moved from Portland to Austin, Texas, where he ran a graphic design company. In 2007, on his sixth trip to the contest, he placed second again and won a Martin D-18 Golden Era. By then he had played guitar for 17 years and also entered the mandolin and fingerstyle contests.
Miner later moved to Nashville and built a career as a session guitarist. Bluegrass Today has credited him on a run of Marty Falle recordings, including the 2023 album Kentucky Blue Star, alongside Rob Ickes, Matt Menefee, Mike Bub, and Jonathan Yudkin. He demonstrates guitars on camera for Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville. His own releases include the singles The Ballad of Sleepy Stardust (2022), Meriwether (2023), and G. Patterson (2024), and a live album, Live at Their House (2023).
In 2025 he returned to Winfield and won both the flatpick guitar and mandolin championships. He took home a Collings Winfield Model guitar and a Bourgeois M5-F mandolin.
Playing style
Miner’s playing centers on original tunes. He sells tablature for G. Patterson, The Longing, Meriwether, and The Ballad of Sleepy Stardust, and his 2025 Winfield sets were built on his own compositions. The Walnut Valley Association’s write-up praised both the technical command and the creative side of those sets.
His site lists the Dunlop Tortex Flex Triangle 1.14 mm as his pick. He names Chris Thile and Sam Bush as influences. On camera at Carter Vintage he has played a 1939 Martin D-45 and a 2025 Collings I-35 LC.
Influences and legacy
Miner learned the basics from his stepfather. In the studio he has worked beside Rob Ickes, Matt Menefee, Mike Bub, and Jonathan Yudkin. His 2025 win made him one of the few players to take two Winfield championships in a single year, with Holten Doucette (2022) and Bryan McDowell (2009).

Watch and listen
Here is Miner’s first-place set at the 2025 National Mandolin Championship. Listen for the long melodic lines and the steady right hand.

What to learn from Miner
Learn Meriwether from his tablature. It is a modern flatpicking tune by a working player. The technique to steal is his habit of writing. Take a fiddle tune you know, keep its form, and write a new melody over the same chords. Miner won Winfield in 2025 with tunes he wrote. Writing one of your own will teach you more about the form than ten more standards.
